Popular Aussie Grass VarietiesThese days it's not just as simple as mowing your lawn, there are so many different varieties of grass out there that it can be extremely overwhelming trying to find the right type of grass for your lawn. We’ve dished the dirt (s’cuse the pun) on four common types of lawns in Australia.
Warm Season Lawns
Warm season grasses generate from seeds and runners. Their runners creep along the ground and spread into surrounding areas – great if you’re wanting your lawn to repair itself, but not ideal if your lawn starts spreading into your garden bed! Couch and Kikuyu varieties are the most invasive warm season grasses as their runners can burrow under garden beds and wind their way through your paving. Warm season lawns can be mown at shorter heights than cool season lawns with heights of 1.2cms quite common in Couch, Queensland Blue and Zoysia varieties. Cool Season Lawns These variety of lawn seeds sprout a single shoot which then grows shoots from its side as it matures. This growth out the sides thickens that one single shoot of grass, a process called Tillering. As this variety of grass grows and thickens it creates a thick and lush lawn. As these type of grasses doesn’t contain runners, so they won’t grow anywhere they’re not wanted, like your garden or paths. Cool Season Lawns will grow in warmer climates, however won’t thrive in humidity. Some varieties are more heat tolerant than others but may require more watering, fertalisation and general care than others. Popular Cool Season Lawn varieties include Bent Grass, Bluegrass and Fine Fescue. Drought Tolerant Lawns A drought tolerant lawn is a water saving must for many Victorians, but the ability for grass to remain green and stay alive during summer water restrictions all depends on the grass’s drought tolerance. Couch Lawns, Buffalo Grass and Zoysia Grass are all drought tolerant lawns available here in Australia. Couch Lawn stays green for longer during water restrictions and like Zoysia Grass, has the ability to recover from the heat and lack of water once it has died off. There are many varieties of Buffalo Grass which tolerates both full sun and shade, yet grows better in partial shade. To prep for drought conditions, you should avoid mowing the lawns too short. A bit of extra length on the grass blades will help stop water evaporating from the soil. As water restrictions hit, water much less frequently but water for longer which will reduce water usage over time. |

High Traffic Area Lawns
High traffic places stress through wear and tear on lawns, so if you have young children or pets who play on the grass often it may be worth looking into high traffic lawn varieties. Kikuyu is a hardy grass that is great at repairing itself after heavy wear and tear. Kikuyu grows quite quickly so is a bit needier in the mowing department than other varieties. Couch and Zoysia varieties are also tough grasses that are suitable for high traffic areas.
