Our Top 5 Gardening Tips for a Hot Aussie Summer
Depending on where in Australia you are, summer can mean different things for us gardeners. While those of us in the Southern regions get hit with heatwaves and bake in dry 40 degree temperatures, those up North experience humid conditions and monsoonal storms. While neither heatwaves nor tropical monsoons are ideal gardening weather, we have some great tips below that will help keep your garden care on point this summer, no matter what the weather has in store.
- Protect your new plants
If you’re planting seedlings make sure they’ve got some shelter from the sun for the first few weeks. Whether that be shade-cloth, dead palm fronds or even disused net curtains, the seedlings will need some sun hardening and providing shade in the early weeks will allow the seedlings to establish themselves without the sun causing harm.
- Water before the sun rises
Any keen gardener will know not to water in the heat of the day in fact, the best time to water your garden is in the morning. You can also water in the late afternoon just beware of those pesky mosquitos!
- Mulch your garden beds
Not only will mulching your garden make it look tidier, it also helps retain moisture in the soil for longer and reduces weed growth. Laying weed mat and mulch may seem like a big time investment initially but not having to pull out weeds and of course the water saving benefits are definitely worth getting it done.
- Check your watering system and hoses regularly for damage or blockages
The harsh Aussie sun can degrade cheaper hoses and watering systems. Always roll your hose up after watering, store in a shady area and ensure all in ground watering systems are covered.
- Feed your plants with a quality fertilizer
Summer can be tough on your garden so the regular addition of fertilizer is essential in keeping healthy soil and plants. Follow the directions on the pack of fertiliser you buy and if possible buy plant specific fertilizer if available (roses, citrus trees etc).
